Motorola Solutions' on-premises enterprise suite (Unity), with native AI analytics including facial recognition — a separate cloud-native suite (Alta) also exists. Not yet benchmarked on our test bench.

Strengths

  • Native AI (AdaptAI): facial recognition, LPR, unusual-motion and firearm detection built in, not a third-party add-on.
  • FIPS-compliant encryption available for government/high-security deployments.

Limitations

  • Compatible with any ONVIF camera, but full AI/PTZ depth favours Avigilon's own cameras — soft hardware lock-in.
  • The brand also sells Avigilon Alta, a fully cloud-native suite (not self-hosted) — don't confuse the two; this entry covers on-prem Unity.

Criteria

Open source (auditable code)
Self-hosted (runs on your hardware)
Works without a mandatory vendor account
Works with any ONVIF/RTSP camera (no hardware lock-in)
Built-in facial recognition
Encrypts stored footage at rest
Remote access without a vendor cloud
Web + desktop + mobile apps
