Google's own app and cloud for Nest cameras and doorbells (Google Home app, Nest Aware). The most polished consumer ecosystem, but also the most cloud-locked: no local stream and a mandatory Google account. Analysed in depth for a Noviscan integration (event-driven SDM plugin), not yet bench-tested — no Nest hardware on our bench so far.
Strengths
- Best-in-class detection (person, familiar faces, package, sound) and a very polished Google Home experience across mobile and web.
- Rare among consumer cloud cameras: an official developer API (Smart Device Management / Device Access) exposes events and event snapshots, enabling third-party integration — Noviscan ships an event-driven Nest plugin built on it.
- Strong platform security engineering by Google (encryption in transit and at rest, mandatory 2-Step Verification).
Limitations
- No local stream at all: newer cameras are WebRTC-only, with no RTSP/ONVIF and no local recording — everything routes through Google's cloud, and a Google account is mandatory.
- A Nest Aware subscription is needed for most of the value: event video history, Familiar Faces (facial recognition) and 24/7 recording are paywalled; the free tier is minimal.
- The developer API is hard to reach: it needs a Google account MIGRATED from a legacy Nest account (legacy accounts are refused), a paid Device Access project, and the home's creator to be migrated — a real hurdle we hit first-hand during integration.
- Google Nest first-party devices only; no third-party cameras. Google also has a track record of sunsetting devices and APIs (Works with Nest closed in 2019; older/Dropcam support ended 2024) — a platform-longevity risk.
