• Best open-source NVR software— Fully open-source options — auditable source and no licence cost. Note: Noviscan is a commercial product and is deliberately not listed here, even though we publish it; this guide is about open source.
• Best VMS with built-in facial recognition— These do facial recognition natively — not via a bolt-on server. (Blue Iris and ZoneMinder are excluded here: they need an external AI add-on for faces.)
• Best VMS for remote access without a vendor cloud— Keep your footage and remote viewing off any manufacturer's cloud — either with a directory-only relay or your own reverse proxy / VPN.
• Best VMS that encrypt stored footage at rest— Most self-hosted VMS store plain video files. These are the ones that actually encrypt footage at rest — a real privacy differentiator.
• Best camera brands for local RTSP/ONVIF (no vendor cloud)— These brands expose a reliable local RTSP/ONVIF stream, so their cameras work with any self-hosted VMS (Noviscan included) instead of only the maker's app. Prefer wired/PoE models; many battery/4G models drop local streaming.
